Are your canvas prints archival?
Yes, we use 100% cotton canvas, OBA FREE (optical brightner agent). An authentic artist canvas featuring a subtle feel and random texture. This canvas is available in both a bright white for the reproduction of photographs or a natural seeded for the reproduction of fine art. GMS cotton canvas types have been fade tested with pigment inks and achieved light stability of greater than 80 years. Our 100% cotton canvas iis archival with acid free coatings and water resistant surfaces.
Does a canvas print need a laminate?
Yes, all good canvas printers laminate their canvas prints. This is a coating of protective spray which not only protects from harmful UV rays but also protects the canvas from scratches, scuff marks and humidity. As with all prints and artwork, it is not advisable to hang in direct sunlight as even laminates will not protect a print 100%. So it is best to take this into consideration when choosing a wall to hang any artwork.
What about fine art papers?
Our most popular fine art paper is Cranes Museo® MAX. From one of the worlds oldest paper mills. Cranes is a USA company, and is most famous for producing the paper for the dollar bill. The paper is high textured, 100% cotton rag, fine art as well as being archival.
Museo® has a color gamut larger than any other fine art paper on the market today, you'll get huge reds, vibrant blues, and explosive greens. For black and white print, Museo® MAX for Dmax and fine detail is unlike any other rag paper.
Crafted to archival standards Museo® MAX will let you achieve Maximum density, Maximum gamut, and Maximum tonal range.
What size can I print my image?
If you are unsure about print sizes, please contact us, we will advise you and we will produce a test strip from images that are borderline, at no extra cost to you.
Image Size Issues - Notes to Customer
It is mistakenly assumed that by increasing the dpi (pixels per inch) and increasing the file size and dimensions, you will be able to print your image to any size. Unfortunately this is the wrong assumption. The image quality reproduction depends on the following: digital data embedded within the original image, the camera, the lense, and the CCD. By increasing the file size you may not achieve the results you expect. The easiest way to work out the optimum print size of an image is as follows:
Within Photoshop® go to the image size dialogue box. There will be an image width, height and resolution option, as well as the all important 'Pixel Dimension' marked in red on the 2 screen grabs. The Pixel Dimensions should remain the same after resizing as it was before. In Photoshop® Whilst keeping the 'Resample Image' box checked, change the Resolution to a lower figure. (The lowest pixels/inch we print is 100 but the optimum would be 300dpi). Note: We get the best image repro results at 200 - 300pixels/inch. You can see from the sample screen grabs below, first screen the document image is sized at 300pixels/inch and the second screen, as we decrease the pixels/inch to 100pixels/inch, note the image size increases. IMPORTANT NOTE: only change the resolution setting, do not adjust the width and height using this method or you may change the height - width ratio, leading to a stretched or trunkated image. If you are unsure please leave this calculation for our studio to assess and do not change the image size in any way.

Which file format should I use?
The standard file formats are jpg and tiff. Jpgs are great for file size but they are limited when it comes to resizing as by their very nature they are compacted. This means that some of the pixel data is lost. Once this has gone it cannot be retrieved. Having said that most of the files we get to print are jpg files and the standard and quality is fantastic. For the best quality we prefer a tif file. The downside of this is that the file size is much larger. RAW images are great as we can resize these considerably. We also print from PDF files. If you are uncertain, contact us and we'll talk you through the options.
Besides Watercolour and Canvas, what other materials do The Artworks print onto?
The Artworks, print on a wide range of materials like many other digital printers. Our inks are pigment based so they are archival and environmentally friendly. Our range is ever expanding. We print onto high quality, archival and mid range photographic papers, super gloss, satin and matt. Banner materials for stands and exhibitions. We are soon to expand into printing onto fabrics and 'wallpaper'. More news to come. To discuss any particualr material please contact us for advice or a sample.
What colour space do I use when I want to send files to The Artworks?
ADOBE RGB (1998) COLOUR SPACE you will find this setting in your Photoshop® image editing software, under the Edit Menu, Colour Settings. It is best to keep this setting to enable you to see the colour expectations whilst editing the image on your computer screen.
Our preferred output is RGB which has a larger colour gamut than CMYK. So keep all your editing in RGB, don't convert the colour to CMYK or you will lose the extended colour gamut range.
What is the maximum size The Artworks can print?
We have a 44", 12 colour, wide format printer. the Maximum paper print is 110 cms allowing for white space all around. Our maximum canvas print size is 100 cms, this allows for the canvas wrapping.
Do you charge extra for the print preparation work?
Unless the prep work is really excessive and labour intensive, No. Unlike most digital printing services, we do not charge for the extra preparation work involved in our print service. So if your image comes in CMYK and needs converting, we will not make a charge. Likewise with the canvas wrap options, your preference does not incur any charges. If we see something that will print badly or is unsuitable, we will contact you. If there are minor scratches or something obviously missed we will either correct it at our end or call you to discuss.
What is your turn around time?
For a canvas print it is normally 3 working days. For a paper print usually 2 working days. If a job is required super fast we can accomodate you if you give us notice. There may be an extra charge incurred for a rush job.
